Sources and citations

Sources we use

  • The official IP India website of the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.
  • The Gazette of India, for amendment notifications.
  • India Code and Legislative Department publications, for consolidated statutory text.
  • Official Patent Office forms, fee schedules, manuals and guidelines.
  • Judgments from official court sources only.

Sources we do not use

Blog posts, commercial summaries, uploaded PDFs of uncertain provenance and AI-generated restatements are not sources for statutory text. They may be useful for orientation; they are not authority, and we do not cite them as such.

What we record for every provision

Behind each page we store the instrument name, chapter, provision number, official heading, exact statutory text, plain-language explanation, effective date, amendment history, official source URL, source document name and version, the date verified, the reviewer's name and the last and next review dates. Act sections and Rules are stored as different content types so that one can never be saved as the other.

How to cite us

Please cite the official source for the law itself. If you are citing our explanation, name the page and the date you read it — the content changes as the law does. Our pages are freely readable and linkable; wholesale republication of our writing is not permitted.
