Rule numbers

1Short title and commencementRule 1 names the Patents Rules, 2003 and fixes the date from which they and each later amendment take effect.
2DefinitionsRule 2 defines the shorthand terms used throughout the Patents Rules so that each expression carries one fixed meaning.
3Prescribed particularsRule 3 sets out what a complete address must contain whenever the Act or Rules require a person's particulars to be given.
4Appropriate officeRule 4 decides which branch of the Indian Patent Office has territorial jurisdiction over an application and the proceedings that follow.
5Address for serviceRule 5 requires every person dealing with the Patent Office to give an address for service in India where official communications can be sent.
6Leaving and serving documentsRule 6 governs how documents are delivered to and served by the Patent Office, and fixes the date on which they count as filed.
7FeesRule 7 makes the First Schedule the single source of patent fees and sets out who pays which category and how payment is made.
8FormsRule 8 requires the official forms in the Second Schedule to be used for their stated purposes, with variations only as the case requires.
9Filing of documents and copies, etc.Rule 9 sets the physical and formal standards for documents filed at the Patent Office, including language, legibility, paper and signatures.
