Startups, MSMEs and educational institutions

The concessions that make Indian patenting affordable for small applicants.

Indian patent fees are tiered. Natural persons, startups, small entities and educational institutions pay official fees in a reduced category — a substantial difference across the life of a patent.

Expedited examination is available to specified categories of applicant, which can cut years from the timeline for an applicant who needs a granted right to raise money or to enforce.

Eligibility must be evidenced, and if an application is later transferred out of a concessional category the fee difference becomes payable.

The provisions that govern this

Act sections and Rules are listed separately, as they always are on this site. Open a provision for its own explanation, example and deadlines.

Are you eligible for the reduced fee category?
